Trucks Given Green Light

by | Jun 4, 2018

A new technology that is currently on trial in Sydney this month, will let trucks communicate with traffic lights in an effort to ease congestion.

Trucks will be given more time to get through green traffic lights on important freight routes, by using wireless technology installed on trucks and about 100 intersections. It will allow the traffic signals and trucks to “talk” with each other to give trucks priority at lights.

The three-month trial will aim to reduce traffic by decreasing the long stop and start times that occur with heavy vehicles, meaning fewer delays for all road users.

Every day about 270,000 trucks cross the city and it is estimated congestion is costing the country $5 billion in lost time every year.

If the trial is a success, the new technology could be extended to other modes of transport, such as emergency vehicles.
