Routes Identified For Driverless Lorries

A recent report has suggested the M6/M74 between Manchester and Glasgow, is the most valuable route for driverless lorries in the UK, and it could reduce costs for companies.

According to transport information firm Inrix, companies would be able to cut costs by using autonomous HGVs on the 215-mile Anglo-Scottish journey because of its rather low congestion and long distance.

With a shortage of qualified HGV drivers causing issues for the industry, driverless lorries could ease the strain. The report stated that automated vehicles are poised to dramatically alter the long-haul trucking sector.

Last year the government announced it would invest £8.1million of funding towards trials later this year. The experiment would see up to three wirelessly connected HGVs travel in convoy, with acceleration and braking controlled by the lead vehicle.

Having the lorries drive in convoy, would see the front vehicle pushing air out of the way, making the other vehicles more efficient and lowering their emissions.

All the lorries will have a driver ready to take control if required.
