Leeds Charge Vehicles For Pollution

by | Oct 17, 2018

New plans, reportedly coming into force from January 2020, aim to cut down air pollution, costing drivers of the most polluting vehicles up to £50 a day to enter the Yorkshire city of Leeds.

In 2016, five local authorities with the worst record on nitrogen dioxide (NO2), were ordered by the government to implement air quality charging schemes. The list included Leeds along with Birmingham, Derby, Nottingham and Southampton.

The Clean Air Zone (CAZ) will cover more than half of Leeds, observing drivers using a network of cameras which could be the first outside of London.

Lorries, buses and coaches all face the maximum charge of £50 a day, whilst taxis and private hire vehicles will be charged £12.50. Light goods vehicles and private vehicles would not be charged under the new scheme.

According to Public Heath England, NOcontributes to about 29,000 UK deaths each year.

Leeds council aim to combat the issue by seeking £27m from the government’s clean air fund to help local businesses to upgrade or modify affected vehicles through grants and interest-free loans.
