Government Offer No-Deal Brexit Advice
A recent publication by the UK Department of Transportation (DoT) has suggested UK trucking companies will no longer be able to rely on automatic recognition by the EU of UK-issued Community Licences, but will be able to apply for a permit scheme.
The DoT advised companies of the existence of the European Conference of Ministers of Transport (ECMT) permit scheme, which would allow truckers to access Europe.
However, the ECMT stated that there are a limited number and they expect demand for ECMT permits to significantly exceed supply.
In the event of a trucking company being unable to obtain a permit, the government suggested that businesses should consider contingency plans for the movement of goods.
However, the DoT declared: “A scenario in which the UK leaves the EU without agreement remains unlikely given the mutual interests of the UK and the EU in securing a negotiated outcome.”
